Off-Campus Rooms For Rent
Looking to rent an off campus student apartment or an off campus house for students with rooms for rent? The school's student residence is not always an option when looking for a place to live while away at school. Off campus rentals are usually more affordable and feels more like home.

Room And Board
Room and board is an offering of lodging and meals in exchange for rent. Families with large houses and an extra bedroom will commonly rent to a student. International students often refer to this as homestay. Not all students will like the same food options as the host family, so some will rent a room that does not include food for cheaper rent.

Know Your Rights
The Residential Tenancies Act can protect you but it is also in place to protect your landlord. You both have rights and responsibilities. You have the right to be treated fairly. It doesn't matter if you are a student or not, you have the right to be treated the same as everyone in your building. We were able to find an example of this happening near Niagara College in Welland, Ontario. The landlord refused to allow one student to have a lock on her bedroom door, while the other students in the student house already had locks on their doors. The tenant said it was unfair and the landlord claimed it was not needed. A similar case from 2001 at student housing near Brock University, not too far from the student housing close to Niagara College in the last example. A male student claimed his landlord was forcing him to give post dated cheques while other tenants could pay on the first of the month. There were some trust issues involved but that does not give a landlord the right to treat him differently. Do not let a landlord tell you that off-campus housing is exempted from the act.
